The uni is a premium wood-cased graphite pencil launched by Mitsubishi Pencil Co. in October 1958, its name derived from the English word "unique". Cased in incense cedar and finished in its signature reddish-brown ("uni maroon") lacquer with a black band and gold foil stamping, it was developed to give a smooth writing feel. Originally offered only in grades 4H to 4B, it is now sold in 17 hardness grades from 9H to 6B and remains in production today.
