Hi-uni is Mitsubishi Pencil Co.'s premium wood-cased graphite pencil, introduced in Japan in 1966 as a higher-grade development of the original Uni and now offered in 22 hardness grades from 10H to 10B. Its core combines graphite and clay particles of differing sizes in a precise ratio to maximise density, giving a smooth, consistent line with reduced breakage, and the lead is encased in California incense cedar finished in deep maroon (burgundy) lacquer with a gold ring on a hexagonal barrel. It is a general-purpose artist and writing pencil, with the harder grades suited to writing and technical work and the softer grades to drawing and sketching.
