The Tombow 8900 is a classic Japanese hexagonal graphite pencil with an olive-green lacquered body, a gold-foil imprint and Tombow's dragonfly logo, a design left almost unchanged since 1948. It is sold in six grades, 2H to 2B, with the barrel marked "For General Writing" though it is also well suited to sketching, and reviewers describe its lead as smooth and darker than a typical Western HB. Launched in 1945 as a premium pencil (originally for photo retouching), it is now an affordable everyday standard and one of Tombow's longest-running products; the line is Japanese, though some Western-market stock has been reported made in Vietnam.
